The negative effects of AI on education.Jamya LewisJul 30, 20243 min readIn the past years, we have seen the growth of AI and how it has numerous positiveimpacts on today's society but, how far are we going to take AI into our lives? ChatGTP wascreated in November of 2022 which allows users to enter a prompt and the virtual assistant willprovide answers. It has helped students create concise outlines for projects and answer questionsthat are extremely niche. These are all great things that have been mentioned, so how is AIcreating such drastic effects that we haven’t seen yet? Will students still be able to retain information with the constant usage of technologyintertwined with their education? Students don’t have to be genuine with their work anymore. There are a number of students who are being ACCUSED of not completing their work whenthey wrote everything 100% themselves. How are we going to safely continue the usage of AIwith education? The generations that are being introduced to AI started their education withoutrelying on technology to learn. Even if they were using electronics it would be in their computerclass so they can learn to surf the internet safely. Let’s not forget about the generation of iPadkids, from the moment they were born technology is all they have known and we have no cluehow that is going to impact them as they get older. In order to grow students have to be able tocomplete the tasks they consider long and complex on their own.Technology has improved the quality of life for humans when it comes tocommunication, healthcare, daily tasks, and so much more. AI is something that has to be usedethically but, how is the question. For teachers to keep their students engaged with the lesson AIand be utilized but can not replace the presence of the teacher. Having guidance while goingthrough the journey of school is extremely important and teachers are the ones who provide that. For example, English teachers could have their students use AI to create a photo that relates to apart of the story the class is on. Students will then be able to cement that important informationinto their minds while having fun creating the images.Learning from a video with a real human voicing over it compared to AI voicing over itis completely different. When listening to a video with a human voicing over it, their emotionsare heard clearly whereas with AI, the sentences are squished together and one can get distractedeasily. In class a student who used AI to complete a simple assignment can obtain the same gradeas someone who used their brain to do their work. This is completely unfair to BOTH of thestudents. One is not using the knowledge that is stored inside them and the other has to competewith technology for getting good grades. As the writer of this blog post, I have personally never used AI as I am too scared of itbut, I have seen amazing ideas be set in stone quickly with the help of AI. There are hundreds ofdifferent learning sites that have been utilizing AI to study students' behaviors and how theycomprehend material. I know that AI is going to help create incredible inventions that willchange the trajectory of our society.
