The negative effects of AI on education.

In the past years, we have seen the growth of AI and how it has numerous positive
impacts on today's society but, how far are we going to take AI into our lives? ChatGTP was
created in November of 2022 which allows users to enter a prompt and the virtual assistant will
provide answers. It has helped students create concise outlines for projects and answer questions
that are extremely niche. These are all great things that have been mentioned, so how is AI
creating such drastic effects that we haven’t seen yet?
Will students still be able to retain information with the constant usage of technology
intertwined with their education? Students don’t have to be genuine with their work anymore.
There are a number of students who are being ACCUSED of not completing their work when
they wrote everything 100% themselves. How are we going to safely continue the usage of AI
with education? The generations that are being introduced to AI started their education without
relying on technology to learn. Even if they were using electronics it would be in their computer
class so they can learn to surf the internet safely. Let’s not forget about the generation of iPad
kids, from the moment they were born technology is all they have known and we have no clue
how that is going to impact them as they get older. In order to grow students have to be able to
complete the tasks they consider long and complex on their own.
Technology has improved the quality of life for humans when it comes to
communication, healthcare, daily tasks, and so much more. AI is something that has to be used
ethically but, how is the question. For teachers to keep their students engaged with the lesson AI
and be utilized but can not replace the presence of the teacher. Having guidance while going
through the journey of school is extremely important and teachers are the ones who provide that.
For example, English teachers could have their students use AI to create a photo that relates to a
part of the story the class is on. Students will then be able to cement that important information
into their minds while having fun creating the images.
Learning from a video with a real human voicing over it compared to AI voicing over it
is completely different. When listening to a video with a human voicing over it, their emotions
are heard clearly whereas with AI, the sentences are squished together and one can get distracted
easily. In class a student who used AI to complete a simple assignment can obtain the same grade
as someone who used their brain to do their work. This is completely unfair to BOTH of the
students. One is not using the knowledge that is stored inside them and the other has to compete
with technology for getting good grades.
As the writer of this blog post, I have personally never used AI as I am too scared of it
but, I have seen amazing ideas be set in stone quickly with the help of AI. There are hundreds of
different learning sites that have been utilizing AI to study students' behaviors and how they
comprehend material. I know that AI is going to help create incredible inventions that will
change the trajectory of our society.
